Apart from studying abroad at a university, students of English also have the opportunity to go abroad for a shorter period of time (summer schools), take part in a teaching and language assistants program, or work abroad for a semester or two. Furthermore, students who have been abroad without earning any ECTS have the chance to book one of the English Department's Stay Abroad modules. Please consult the following sections for more information on each possibility.
Many British and some other universities offer intensive courses covering a whole range of topics during the summer months (sometimes, also in winter).
Please have a look at the Global Student Experience websites for summer schools and winter schools for a list of possible places and information on any stipends.
Furthermore, each year, one student from Switzerland has the chance to win a stipend and a travel bursary for the Yeats Summer School in Sligo.
The Yeats Society in Sligo, Ireland, organises the Yeats International Summer School every year - an opportunity to learn about the famous Nobel-prize winning poet William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), comprising cultural events and excursions in the beautiful county Sligo.
The Yeats Society Sligo offers a place to one student from Switzerland every year (tuition fee of €650.- waived).
To cover expenses for travel and accommodation, the Max Geilinger Stiftung offers a travel bursary of CHF 650.- and the Irish Embassy a bursary for accommodation of CHF 250.-.
The successful candidate will also receive an invitation to the Saint Patrick's Day Reception of the Irish Embassy in Berne.
For more information, please visit the Yeats Summer School Stipend website.
The annual excursion to Stratford-Upon-Avon and London, organised by the English Department of the University of Zurich has become a tradition over the years.

This program is offered annually to students interested in teaching German (or French) to secondary school students in Britain. Before applying you must have completed two years of University study and have either German or French as a native language. You teach 12 hours weekly (preparation time for the lessons is in addition to the 12 hours teaching time) for about nine months (from October to May in England and Wales; from September to May in Scotland and Northern Ireland) for an income that should cover your cost of living. Accommodation and travel expenses are your responsibility.
