Stay Abroad: Research-Based Report Additional Guidelines
Deadlines and Submission
The portfolio must be handed in no later than 6 months after the end of the stay abroad. You should book the module in the semester following your stay abroad. The portfolio must be sent as a Word and PDF file to studyabroad@es.uzh.ch (subject line: Stay Abroad Research-Based Report: Your Name).
Students are expected to submit proof of their stay abroad in the form of supporting documents (e.g. flight tickets, certificates of employment, etc.). Please fill out and sign the form Stay_Abroad_Portfolio_Proof (PDF, 53 KB) and hand it in, together with a single PDF file containing your supporting documents scanned and arranged in chronological order.
If you have already received credit points in English for a stay abroad or studying abroad (e.g. exchange semester, credited summer school, credited internship, regular studies in another country, etc.), it does NOT count as a possible stay abroad for the portfolio.
Before you book the module you should send an outline to the study abroad coordinator (studyabroad@es.uzh.ch) and discuss your idea for the portfolio.
Format
- Title Page: Title “Stay Abroad Research-Based Report: insert name of the Anglophone region”, length of stay (including start and end date(s) with max. one interruption), author’s name, student ID number, email, postal address, word count
- Length: 3,000 words (including examples, figures, and tables, but excluding references and appendices)
- Font: Arial 11 pt. or Times New Roman 12 pt.
- Spacing: 1.5-line spacing
- Margin: Leave left, top and bottom margins of 2.5 cm, and a right margin of 3.5 cm
- References: Make sure to add a bibliography and to reference all your sources (i.e. avoid plagiarism)

Accepted Stay Abroad Areas (Different from Lehrdiplom!)
There are two possibilities:
- English is a de facto (sometimes also de jure) official language and is the first language of the majority of inhabitants in the region in question.*
- English is not the first language of the majority of inhabitants in the region in question, but it is a de jure official language (not only a recognized one).**
Special requirements for the portfolio if your stay abroad area belongs to possibility number 2 (see list):
- Regarding part (2) of the portfolio, the literary work must be originally written in English. This part of the portfolio should also reflect on both the historical context and current role of English in the particular region, especially, but not exclusively, regarding the chosen linguistic feature or literary work.
