Which Bachelor & Master programs are recommended for students planning to do English as a 1st / only teaching subject?
If you plan to do the Lehrdiplom in English as a first (or only) teaching subject, then we recommend that you take:
- the Bachelor Major (120 ECTS) or Minor (60 ECTS) in English Literature and Linguistics
- the Master Major (90 ECTS) in English Literature and/or Linguistics (following the recommended track with Literature and Linguistics).
Which Bachelor & Master programs are recommended for students planning to do English as a 2nd / additional teaching subject?
If you plan to do the Lehrdiplom in English as a second (or additional) teaching subject, then we recommend that you take:
- the Bachelor Minor (60 ECTS) in English Literature and Linguistics
- the Master Minor (30 ECTS) in English Literature and/or Linguistics (following the recommended track with Literature and Linguistics).
Do I need a Master Thesis in English Literature or Linguistics for the Lehrdiplom?
This depends on whether you plan to do English as a first (or only) teaching subject or as a second (or additional) teaching subject:
- English as a first (or only) teaching subject: Yes, you need a Master Thesis in English (or a closely related field; see requirements section for details);
- English as a second (or additional) teaching subject: No, you do not need a Master Thesis in English Literature or Linguistics.
Can I do the Lehrdiplom with a Monomaster in Linguistics?
Yes, you can also do the Lehrdiplom with a Monomaster in Linguistics, provided that:
- for the first (or only) teaching subject, you take at least 45 ECTS in modules in English;
- for the second (or additional) teaching subject, you take at least 30 ECTS in modules in English;
- you fulfill all the other requirements (e.g. Master Thesis in English or a closely related field).
Note: In addition to modules in English Linguistics, the module "Language Data Acquisition" (9 ECTS; module code: 06SM271-517) can be counted for the Lehrdiplom for English as a teaching subject.
Can I do the Lehrdiplom with a Monomaster in Literature?
Yes, you can also do the Lehrdiplom with a Monomaster in Literature, provided that:
- for the first (or only) teaching subject, you take at least 45 ECTS in modules in English;
- for the second (or additional) teaching subject, you take at least 30 ECTS in modules in English;
- you fulfill all the other requirements (e.g. Master Thesis in English or a closely related field).
