Transition from Old to New 90-ECTS Master Program in English Literature and Linguistics

Disclaimer: The applicable legal regulations can be found in the framework ordinance (Rahmenverordnung) and the program regulation (Studienordnung) for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The information below is for illustrative purposes only and should be regarded as a recommendation. In case of any contradictions between this document and the legal regulations or between the German version and a translation, only the legal regulations or the German version, respectively, have legal bearing.

The Basics

If you were enrolled in the old 90-ECTS Master program in English Literature and Linguistics in the spring 2019, you are automatically moved into the new 90-ECTS Master program in English Literature and/or Linguistics.

The following recommended guidelines help you ensure that the transition does not cause any problems.

Important: There are various ways of fulfilling the requirements outlined below. However, given that you started your studies in the old, 'mixed' program - i.e. a Master program in both Literature and Linguistics - we assume that most of you will want to follow the same track. (This is also strongly recommended with a view to the Lehrdiplom.)

If you follow the recommendations of our PDF checklist (PDF, 130 KB), you will

  • be able to ensure that you fulfill the requirements that apply to students who were moved from the old to the new 90-ECTS program.
  • follow the 'mixed' Literature and Linguistics track (i.e. the track that corresponds most closely to the old version of the program).

Note: These transition guidelines do not apply to students who started their studies in the fall 2019 or later. In such cases, the regulations for the new 90-ECTS program apply.

Guidelines

Please read these recommended guidelines carefully. They will help you avoid potential problems arising from the Bologna 2020 reform.

Modules Intended for the Beginning of One's Studies

Methods and Theories (6 ECTS)

Mandatory Master Seminar Linguistics (old)

OR Methods and Theories in English Linguistics (new)

6 ECTS

Mandatory Master Seminar Literature (old)

OR Reading Literary and Critical Theories (new)

If you do (or already have done) both a Literature and a Linguistics modules - which is what we recommend - then the first 6 ECTS count toward this category, while the other 6 ECTS 'spill over' into the Electives (i.e. you will have to do fewer electives.

Note: Students can repeat each of these modules only once.

  • If one fails one of these modules twice, one can continue one's studies by moving to one of the other tracks (i.e. if one fails "Methods and Theories in English Linguistics" twice, one can move to the "Literature only" track; if one fails "Reading Literary and Critical Theories" twice, one can move to the "Linguistics only" track).
  • If one fails both of these modules twice (i.e. four fails overall), one can no longer complete the program.

Language Skills and Culture (6 ECTS)

Language Skills and Culture: Higher (old)

OR Writing Skills and Popular Culture (new)
