Short Internship (Spring 2022): Cultural Mediation

artlink connects culture, art and people - both nationally and across continents. With offices in Bern, artlink particularly promotes the presence of art and culture from Africa, the MENA region, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

For the period between February and July 2022, artlink is offering 4 student internship positions in different projects. Below you will find a detailed description of the projects, tasks and requirements of each internship.

Number of Internship Slots: 1-4

  • Students can apply for one specific project, or for several or even all four. Please indicate your preference(s) in the application dossier.
  • Make sure to list all the languages you speak (incl. level, e.g. B2, C1).

Learning Aims

After these internships, students can:

  • explain the aims, structure, and challenges faced by an organization that aims to foster cultural cooperation;
  • communicate in a professional manner with a range of different actors within the cutlure/arts sector (e.g. artists and curators);
  • use appropriate media formats to organize, publicize and/or display art- and literature-related content.

Internship 1: Project Turntables (Preparation - March/April)

Duration: 28.03.22 – 24.04.22
2 to 3 days a week, 4 weeks altogether.

Project
Turntables creates targeted digital and hybrid networking opportunities for cultural practitioners from Switzerland and artists from the global South/East. The Turntables Artist Directory is a digital directory of artists and cultural practitioners from the global South/East and of Swiss cultural promoters. This directory, which will be freely accessible to the public, collects short profiles and work samples created by those represented in the directory. A standard component of all profiles is a 3-min video in which the individual artist and cultural practitioner introduce themselves and their working methods. Currently, Turntables is collecting profiles for its directory. An open call has been sent with the aim of collecting 100 Artists who will be showcased through Turntables.

Internship Tasks:

  • Reading artists’ applications from the Open Call 100 Artists
  • Writing protocol of the Jury Commission of the Open Call 100 Artists  
  • Preparing an announcement of winners of the Open Call 100 Artists
  • Start drafting concept for activation formats for the Artistic Directory
  • Collecting and creating material for social media

Requirements:

  • Interest in contemporary culture and art
  • Ready to work independently in a team
  • English is the primary language for communication and work. German/French are of advantage, but not mandatory.

 

Internship 2: Project Turntables (Publicizing - April/May)

Duration: 11/18.04.22 – 08/15.05.22

2 full weeks with an extra day or 2-3 days a week, 4 weeks altogether (to be defined together with the intern)

  • Editing and proofreading artistic profiles
  • Uploading artistic profiles to the Artistic Directory
  • Write-ups for activation formats for the Artistic Directory.

Requirements:

  • Interest in contemporary culture and art
  • Ready to work independently in a team
  • Excellent grasp of written English
  • English is the primary language for communication and work. German/French are of advantage, but not mandatory.

Duration: 01.03.2022 – 10.06.2022

Minimum 4 hours a week. Flexible distribution of working hours, based on student’s schedule.

Project
artlink Litklub: Literatures in Context offers a platform in Switzerland for literature and reading in all its diversity. We foreground experiences, narratives, aesthetic movements and voices from the world of literature. We create an atmosphere of exchange through thematic focal points, live reading events, curatorial collaborations, online contributions, podcasts and multimedia performances by authors and other literary producers from around the world who enter into direct dialogue with a reading and culturally aware audience in Switzerland. We build new spaces of contact and exchange that go beyond the printed text.  

Internship Tasks:

  • Assisting in the organization of a cultural event (June 9) involving several speakers and in collaboration with 3 other institutions
  • Assisting in the research and conceptualization of a literary podcast related to books sent to the artlink Litklub members
  • Conceptualizing strategies for attracting new members to the artlink Litklub

Requirements:

  • Interest in postcolonial literatures with a focus on African history and contemporary concerns
  • Ready to work independently in a team
  • German is the primary language of communication with the event organizers and Litklub members. German C1 level is therefore required. A good command of English is also useful

 

Duration: 01.04.2022 – 01.07.2022

Minimum 4 hours a week. Flexible distribution of working hours, based on student’s schedule.

Project
artlink seeks to reposition itself as a networking platform connecting cultural organizations with artists in Switzerland and elsewhere. Our identity, our vision and our projects have changed over the past year. Each year a call for support is sent to passive members of the association. For the year 2022 we want to attract, inform and gain new members.

Internship Tasks:

  • Brainstorming and conceptualizing strategies for attracting new members to artlink
  • Research work on the synergies of our association with others
  • Profile analysis of passive members

Requirements:

  • Ready to work independently in a team
  • Interest in marketing and association structure, creative and curious mind
  • German and French are the primary language of communication with the members. C1 level is therefore required for at least one of these languages. A good command of English or Spanish is also useful.

Assessment

Asessment:

  • Time Sheet: Students will have to submit a time sheet documenting their workload (c. 90 hours). The time sheet needs to be signed off by the contact person at the partner institution.
  • Documentation: Dossier that documents the practical work completed during the internship.

  • If available: latest semester transcript from your Master studies
