Bachelor: Module Catalog

Disclaimer: The applicable legal regulations can be found in the framework ordinance (Rahmenverordnung) and the program regulation (Studienordnung) for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Types of Modules

The official module catalog is available on the website of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. However, we have provided a slightly adapted (and perhaps more user-friendly) version on the English Department website.

The modules in the module catalog for the Bachelor program in English Literature and Linguistics (Major and Minor) differ in important aspects. Some of the key differences between individual modules concern:

  • module prerequisites
  • number of ECTS credits
  • graded or pass/fail
  • duration (i.e. one- or two-semester module)
  • course type (e.g. lecture, seminar, self-study module, etc.)
  • type(s) of assessment
  • module group

Details can be found in the individual module descriptions:

Further Details on the Information in the Module Catalog

Some of the information in the module catalog may be a bit difficult to interpret, from a student perspective. This section provides some further explanation of the information contained in the individual module descriptions.

Offered on a Regular Basis?

One question is whether or not a given module has to be offered on a regular basis, or whether it is a module that may or may not be offered in any given semester:

  • 'long-living' or recurring modules: These modules have to be offered on a regular basis (e.g. every semester, every fall semester, etc.).
  • module templates ('Modulschablonen'): These are modules that do not have to be offered on a regular basis.

In the individual module descriptions on the English Department website, this information is included under "Duration" (e.g. "one-semester module, not offered on a regular basis").

Module Code

The individual module descriptions contain a module code, as follows:

  • 'long-living' or recurring modules: The module code in the individual module descriptions has the format "06SM440-???" (e.g. "06SM440-020"), and one can use the module code to look for such modules in the online course catalog (without "06SM"; e.g. "440-020").
  • module templates ('Modulschablonen'): The module code in the individual module descriptions has the format "06SM440-s??" (e.g. "06SM440-s04"). Such module codes cannot be used to look for modules in the course catalog; these are the codes for the module templates, but not for the individual modules based on such templates. In the UZH course catalog, the module codes for modules based on templates will have the following format: "440 + letter + three digits" (e.g. "440d502").
