This February, the Literaturhaus Zürich celebrates current literature from Southern
Africa.
We have invited authors, publishers, translators, and artists from South Africa,
Zimbabwe, and Namibia, as well as African writers living in both Europe and the US, to talk about their writing and their lives. In their works—novels and poetry collections,
graphic novels, memoirs, and photographs—they engage with collective and individual
memory, describe the challenges and possibilities of the present day, and venture a look towards the future. The program is curated by Isabelle Vonlanthen of the Literaturhaus Zürich and Thando Mgqolozana, founder of the Abantu Book Festival, which has been offering a platform for black authors and readers in Soweto since 2016. The festival has become an important part of the literary landscape in South Africa.
