The focus of this teaching unit lies on the cultural aspect of Irish nationalism, in which Roger Casement himself was deeply involved. Specifically, in this teaching unit, the students will learn about the importance of having a language and a history for the creation and maintenance of a national identity.
Students are usually taught about African or Asian countries when learning about colonialism and imperialism. This means that Ireland as the original British colony is usually not recognised as such. The purpose of this unit, then, is to recreate the process of decolonising the mind (a concept introduced by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o) with the students through reclamation of Irish history and the Irish language.
