Short Bio

Carlos Hartmann serves as a Teaching and Research Assistant in English Linguistics.

During his undergraduate years, he extensively researched the singular they pronoun. Both his BA and MA theses were honored with the UZH's Semesterpreis award. His MA thesis, Shifting Pronouns and Disruptive Technology: Studying Singular They with GPT-3, was among the pioneering works using Large Language Models (LLMs) in linguistic research.

For his cumulative PhD project, he is continuing the exploration of LLMs as research tools while delving deeper into the sociolinguistic dynamics behind the current use and ongoing evolution of singular they.

His research extends into gender performance in the online space in the form of currently-underway research on pronoun-declaring users of Reddit.

Recent Activities

My currently-underway research on themself and Pronoun Declarers of Reddit was presented at the “What are your pronouns?” conference in Montpellier (October ’24). My next project concerns strategies of automatic number-disambiguation of they.

I am a regular speaker for the psychoanalytic film society Cinépassion

I regularly support the secondary schools Kantonsschule Enge and Kantonsschule Rämibühl as guest speaker and expert advisor on students’ final theses.
