The Corpus and Principles of Selection

The selection of poetry from the Liberia Herald (1842-1857) is taken from the digitized copies of the newspaper that are available at Archive.org.

The list below provides a preliminary overview. The aim is to compile all poems that meet one or both of the following critieria:

  • written especially for the Liberia Herald (usually by Liberians);
  • clear connection to Liberia in terms of theme or topic.

Poems by 'non-Liberians' are marked with an asterisk (*) in the final column below.
