Teaching Diploma

The Teaching Diploma allows one to teach at Maturitätschulen. Anyone interested in teaching at other levels, should look at the website of the Pädagogische Hochschule Zürich. 

Details on the admission process can be found on the admissions website. 

It is possible to start the Teaching Diploma while still completing the Master's degree in English studies (or a closely related field such as Literary Studies or Linguistics) at UZH. In such cases, the MA level prerequisites must be fufiled by the end of the Teaching Diploma at the latest.

General Prerequisites

• Students must have completed studies that correspond to the content of the Bachelor Minor in English Literature and Linguistics. 
• overall (BA and/or MA), at least 21 ECTS in English Literature
• overall (BA and/or MA), at least 21 ECTS in English Linguistics
• Students must have C1 German skills as the Teaching Diploma is taught in German.
• All students must complete a stay abroad  to complete the teaching diploma.
• It is not possible to do the teaching diploma if the Master Major does not correspond to the so-called branch of studies (German: 'Studienrichtung') of the first teaching subject

Additional Prerequisites for English as the only or 1st Teaching Subject

• a Master's degree in English Studies (or a closely related field) with at least 60 ECTS credits (or being enrolled in an MA degree program at UZH).
• a Master's thesis in English Literature and/or Linguistics (or a closely related field, e.g. another modern language or computer linguistics)
• at least 45 ECTS in English Literature and/or English Linguistics at Master's level

Additional Prerequisites for English as the 2nd Teaching Subject

• a Master's degree in English Studies (or a closely related field) with at least 30 ECTS credits or being enrolled in an MA degree program at UZH). 
• at least 30 ECTS in English Literature and/or English Linguistics at Master's level

If any of the subject-specific requirements are not met, they may be given as additional requirements.

In order to complete the Teaching Diploma, students must complete a stay abroad in an anglophone region. More information can be found on the stay abroad requirement website.
