Teaching Diploma

The Teaching Diploma allows one to teach at Maturitätschulen. Anyone interested in teaching at other levels, should look at the website of the Pädagogische Hochschule Zürich.

General Prerequisites

• Students must have completed studies that correspond to the content of the Bachelor Minor in English Literature and Linguistics. 
• Students must have C1 German skills as the Teaching Diplom is taught in German.
• All students must complete a stay abroad  to complete the teaching diploma.
• It is possible to start the Teaching Diploma while still completing the Master degree in English (or Literary Studies or Linguistics) at UZH. 
• It is not possible to do the teaching diploma if the Master Major does not correspond to the so-called branch of studies (German: 'Studienrichtung') of the first teaching subject.

Prerequisites for English as the only or 1st Teaching Subject

• at least 45 ECTS in English Literature and/or English Linguistics at Master level
• overall, at least 21 ECTS in English Literature
• overall, at least 21 ECTS in English Linguistics
• in addition, a Master Thesis in English Literature and/or Linguistics (or a closely related field, e.g. another modern language or computer linguistics)

Prerequisites for English as the 2nd Teaching Subject

• at least 30 ECTS in English Literature and/or English Linguistics at Master level
• overall, at least 21 ECTS in English Literature
• overall, at least 21 ECTS in English Linguistics

If any of these requirements are not met, they may be given as additional requirements.

In order to complete the Teaching Diploma, students must complete a stay abroad in an anglophone region. More information can be found on the stay abroad requirement website.
