Open Access means free access to scientific information and unrestricted use of electronic resources for everyone. Authors make their own scientific contributions publicly available, and interested parties can read these publications without technical, financial, or legal barriers.
There are various ways in which authors can make their publications publicly accessible. Platforms and tools help to find suitable publishers and journals for an open access publication in the field of law. The University Library offers authors financial support for publishing in gold OA or in hybrid publication channels, among other things through read-and-publish contracts with publishers. Only publications in a Diamond Open Access journal as well as self-archiving, also known as the green road to Open Access, are completely free of charge. In the case of the green road, the article is published in a traditional publication channel, but is subsequently self-archived in a suitable repository (at UZH in ZORA), and thus made publicly accessible. In the case of traditional publications, extensive rights of use are often signed over to the publisher, so that the rights of the authors are severely restricted. In such cases, the publisher's specifications in the contract (copyright transfer agreement or license to publish) determines which manuscript version may be self-archived under which conditions.
