The Ruthwell Cross (dated to c. 750 AD) is one of the most impressive monuments that have come down to us from early medieval England. The high cross bears the longest epigraphic text in Old English runes, known as The Ruthwell Crucifixion Poem. Not only is this inscription one of the earliest religious poems in English, it is also an important source for the Old English language, more precisely, for the dialect of Early West Northumbrian, and also for the development of the runic script in this particular area. This guest lecture will discuss various levels of language which give us intriguing insights into what English was like in 8th-century Northumbria.
